OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. Stream to Twitch, YouTube and many other providers or record your own videos with high quality H264 / AAC encoding.
Yup, OBS is the best. There’s a million YouTube tutorials out there, you can pretty much make anything you want happen using the build in tools, plug-ins, and ingenuity(edited)

Can't deny, I love it too. Hideaki Anno has a thing that ticks with me with his vision on machinery and technology. Over the top and outside of any expectation - especially considering the absurd endings of his works lol
Big robots fighting creepy giant enemies? Check Characters overcoming absurd odds? Check Teenagers going through very relatable real-life problems? Check Mind after the ending of both anime and movies? Blown
so does anyone else have to turn their game settings down to stream? I just got a brand new PC, and I haven't tried streaming games at max settings yet, but with my Old PC I had to turn down the game settings to be much lower than what I normally play at to have a stable stream
I normally turn game settings down yeah, something about streaming being more taxing on the pc I guess, or maybe your internet connection affects it? I'm not the most techy person here XD
Really: Don't. Dual Graphics Cards are a nightmare now days; you might be able to do a dual PC setup but even that is overrated. I understand the wish to play with the best possible looking game settings but well, there's a difference between playing a game and streaming a game.
I emptied like 1/3 of my bank account into my new PC lol, I don't think I can afford another PC, but for someone with only 170 followers on twitch that wouldn't make sense for me

Depending on your new PC's power you should be fine running things pretty high. OBS doesn't use much overhead on a high end chip and a 30/40 series nVidia card barely feels encoding now.

I'll be testing this at some point in the future, once I can get my hands on an Intel GPU. But I agree, there's a lot of hassle involved for not a lot of return with a dual-GPU setup currently. Feel free to keep track of it here: https://discord.com/channels/408977299459801088/1053084389929648188

I’m live streaming a few sporting events and not all the venues will have an ethernet connection available for me to use. What would be the best way for me to get a fast internet connection?
That depends a lot of the equipment you'll have available, but if you can get a 4G/5G signal with your phone, you can use it as a router to get internet to your gear.
@deere76 I would either make it a part of your contract to have access to that services, or look into an LTE modem. I’ve used Peplink products for this in the past.
No, not really. Would be a bit of an arbitrary move to implement a rule and make it irrelevant at the same time. However I also want to elaborate that this here is not a discord to find an audience. Having the promo here can be interesting for finding other content creators to network, maybe collaborate. Just posting your channel will not bring you much new viewership on itself. The safeguard was implemented to focus on the actual topic of this community: Learning, discussing and better understanding live content creation. Therefore posting to #💯│raid-targets can be good and cool, yet you will benefit a lot more from actually interacting and contributing.(edited)
Hi I’m not sure if this is against the rules so I wanted to ask here. I have an elgato hd60s that I’m selling and I posted it over on hardwareswap on Reddit but wanted to see if I could ask this discord as well since it’s specific for streaming
Hi all. I'm looking to start streaming casually. I will be using an M1 Macbook Pro (not ideal for streaming, I know), and mainly streaming games from a Nintendo Switch. I'm looking at purchasing an Elgato HD60S+ as I've read this is compatible with both the M1 and the Switch, but when I've gone to purchase one I can't find anything saying it's definitely compatible with either - it lists PS5 and Xbox, but no Switch, and I'd just like some reassurance that I'd be purchasing the correct capture card. Would this be good for both audio and visual streaming? Would this fit the M1 Thunderbolt ports, or would I need an additional device to connect it? Sorry if these are dumb questions, I'm new to the streaming world and want to make sure I get things right. Thanks.
@yungrob4 Not dumb questions at all. The HD60 S+ should work fine. I'm sure there's some legal reason why Elgato doesn't state that you can capture from a Switch device. The HD60 S+ will accept HDMI inputs of various resolutions, including the resolution output by the Switch. There may be issues with the Mac, however. Is it a regular M1, or an M1 Pro/Max? Could you provide the MBP model number, ex. A2338?

lol fair, For me it's going pretty solid, got a new tower so was able to get back into the stream the past few days. Missed it a lot. Excited for a bunch of new games coming out in the new few weeks and playing through Calisto right now and it isn't bad.
Depends on your budget and what you want to use it for. If you really wanna go on the inexpensive end, you can find a few different models on AliExpress, which will definitely have a higher quality than your laptop's.
Kpb
What kind of inexpensive webcam would you recommend to streamers, or is the one on the computer usually enough?
I was recently struggling a bit with burnout and took two weeks off from streaming. Today was my first stream again and I was so overwhelmed with the support and genuine happiness by people that I returned. Had the double of my average viewers and it felt so, so good to just vibe again. I don't think that i want to take breaks to often (or for to long) but it's such an interesting realization that a.) People notice and b.) That listening to myself was the right call.(edited)

I used the cheapest Best Buy webcam for the first few years and it worked great, was 30 bucks. More important is good lighting.
@Kpb Here's a few of the devices I continue to use for lighting: 1. WiZ Smart Light Bulbs, Full Color Tunable with app - $13ea 2. Elgato Key Light Air, Bi-color tunable Edge-lit diffused light, app-controlled, works with Stream Deck - $116 3. Logitech Litra Glow, Direct-lit with diffusion lenses, Bi-color tunable - $60

"On a budget" is pretty relative. Do you have a more defined budget? Under $100? Under $30? (edited)
You can get a softbox lighting kit for under $50 on Amazon that could basically work for your entire streaming and video content career. Generally anything "gamer" or specifically focused for streamers is going to have a price tag. Stuff for photographers, however, is all the same stuff but way cheaper.(edited)
hey yall i have a question. do any of yall think people on fivir who say they can help grow you channel are worth it bc personally i am not a 100% sold on it
The only different kind of service that goes beyond the usual "coaching" practices is a consultancy involving your brand as a creator, but that's something for people that already got to a point where they feel the need to change, rework or evolve their content.
1:27 PM
For streamers that don't have enough experience (that are still figuring out their content, for example), what can actually make a difference is researching, networking and trying new ideas out on their content, workflow and individual channels.
1:31 PM
This, and the most basic "trick" to growing your channel. Keep creating content, keep streaming. The more you put yourself out there on a regular basis, the more chances your potential viewers will get of discovering you.
Technically changing over from twitch to yt (and vise versa) is changing a setting in OBS. However:
Depending on your setup your overlays won't work correctly
Most viewers don't want to change so you'd start from 0
Your overall workflow might change drastically.
1:07 PM
You can use something like restream to stream to both websites at the same time but it will increase the complexity of stuff(™️) quite a bit (e.g. aggregating two chats, having overlay events for both platforms etc.) but it is viable.
1:08 PM
If you just started: Discoverablity is shit on both. There are tons of approaches but my main recommendation is: Keep at it as long as you enjoy what you're doing
Already did Just wanted to ping you as there's some real bad stuff (crypto casinos) popping up that we certainly don't want to have around.

Found a Sony a5000 for super cheap on FB Marketplace, applying a hack to give it clean HDMI was super easy and took about 5 minutes, and it looks just as good as my Canon m50 Mk II. Definitely the way to go when you want to upgrade from a webcam.

I don't know how you do it, complete game after game. I hyperfixate on specific games to the point where I forget any other games exist. Proof: A recent conversation.
you can also multi stream with an OBS plugin but i think Restream is easier, and you can transfer chat messages between platforms with the restream bot

Hi guys, I'm new to the streaming scene and I'm sure this question has been asked at some point already. But I'd like to know as of February 2023, what is the best streaming platform: OBS or Streamlabs?
3:02 PM
I saw what they did with the streamlabs ultra thing and I'm not really fond of that type of monetization
Just to clarify a few things: • Youtube and Twitch are streaming platforms - which is better, depends on what content are you creating, and what features from each platform complement it better. • OBS and Streamlabs are both streaming software, although OBS Studio is still the better option.(edited)
3:51 PM
Streamlabs is a bloated copy of OBS Studio that doesn't contribute back to the original open-source code, and was sold to Logitech. Minus the plugin feature, plus their "premium" plan, that doesn't really add anything new that you wouldn't be able to do better with plugins and other tools anyways.(edited)
3:56 PM
Here are a few reasons not to use Streamlabs or to subscribe to their services: • Using the OBS name against the wishes of the OBS Project Team, then trying to fill in a trademark over the OBS name:
• Streamlabs defaults subscribing viewers to their "PRO" service (a monthly subscription) when they make a donation to streamers through their platform, while not showing any active subscriptions on their platform.
There shouldn't be any issue with using soundclips for alerts, but keeping in mind that they can become a nuisance after a few consecutive alerts, you'll probably end up with a simple sound for each one, if you use sounds for alerts at all.
4:34 PM
I believe some platforms determine a minimum length of an audio clip to be able to be receive a strike, and alerts are too short to count.
Side note, I’ve used all three elements, obs and Streamlabs and settled on Streamlabs for ease of access. Had a lot of talks with the guys there during twitchcon too and they do give you a lot for value. Same time you “can” do everything they do without it, but it is a lot more of a time since. Even the auto clip maker they have for TikTok and insta saves time instead of having to use davinci resolve or something else. But obs I use for my YouTube stuff for barebones. It is all whatever works best for you amigo
@Thercio Sorry for pinging you specifically but you helped me the other day too. I just wanted to ask what is required to be able to type in the self promote channel(edited)
No problem. But we don't have a self-promote channel, we have a #💯│raid-targets channel instead. The difference in purpose is not to get viewers from posting there (as many people in other servers will tell you that "it works"), but for you to pick someone with similar content to yours to raid after your stream is done. To gain access, you simply have to be an active part of our community, and with time you'll gain permission to post there.(edited)
It would get very spammy real fast, if we allowed anyone to post there as soon as they enter the server, which would make the channel much harder to moderate.
6:26 PM
If people aren't going to network and participate in the first place, no one is going to click on their links anyways.
In the future we can implement a bot with automatic detection, which should post channels automatically - and delete the message once the person goes offline(edited)

JKR is already swimming in money from all the brand deals involved in the Wizard World (or whatever her "brand universe" is called), and the people that are aware of any controversy surrounding the game that decided to boycott it is just a bubble, compared to the overall number of buyers.
It’s an interesting look into gaming groups for sure I was just annoyed that me playing Ragnarok had someone go off Also I was told while playing dead space remake Monday that if I streamed HP (which I don’t even own) I would be Doxxed. Person actually knows my address too since I bought something from their shop two years ago, sooooo that was cool
Is JKR still a shitty person? Yeah. Does anyone boycotting a game made with her IP do anything to her bank account? No. She's been paid already when the game was licensed, anything else is just extra for her.
10:37 AM
You should do you. Try to report people who threaten you. Especially this individual trying to doxx you. If they got your address, you should have theirs as well, go to the police.
Buy Hogwarts Legacy to save the game developers! [This is satire against transphobia]

10:55 AM
I personally have a pretty strict feeling about the game and the author which I don't want to post in a long paragraphed discussion but feel free to reach out if you have questions.
It's also very emotional and difficult for me, tbh. That's why I am willing to offer explanations but I am really - and I mean really - not looking to discuss it anymore(edited)
Yeah. It doesn't need more free publicity. Warner Brothers got their own marketing team.
11:38 AM
Another point that doesn't help (and not only on this game, but other games and media as well) is that there is always a share of people chiming into it for the clout on top of any controversy, who just add fuel to any fire.
11:43 AM
Seen it increasing a lot on pretty much all platforms with any kind of feed, and I cannot think it's unrelated to the direction we've seen social media platforms going: • Generate engagement at any cost • ... in order to meet "quotas" (advertisement, view numbers, ad revenue, etc) • ... which leads to mass production of low-to-no quality content • Which ends up reflected in similar ways even on low-barrier of entry platforms (like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, where you don't need editing skills, minimum software/hardware requirements or to write long/curated texts)(edited)
11:47 AM
It has never been easier to become a "content creator" than now, with all the free software, available knowledge and hardware accessibility (besides GPU prices), but I have a strong feeling that many people are starting out with the wrong ideas
Hey team, so I've completely had to rethink what I want to do with streaming. As of now, there's no realistic way I can do live streaming, it would be way too inconsistent. My only viable option is to do uploads and possibly through mobile means as I seem to have more spare time at work than I do at home lol
8:39 PM
Im thinking starting out with my switch for the time being and obtain a mobile capture decice. Anyone know of any devices that would help me accomplish this.

Avermedia has a couple of products that might work. The GC513 would be the one I'd look at, though I've not personally tested it with the Switch and cannot confirm if there are HDCP issues .
Hey. Sorry for asking, but would it be fine for me to perhaps post a link to a discord server of mine for content creators? Not sure if that's called networking or not, but it'd be nice to create a smaller style community of creators who can give feedback and support to each other
The problem with advertisement is that we don't know what other communities advertise on their end
2:55 PM
Many content creator servers/communities spread around ideas like "follow 4 follow" and shared viewership of each other's channels - which doesn't help with actual channel growth.
2:56 PM
What we do here is share knowledge that can be useful for as many creators as possible, within their own niches, with their own ideas for their content.

There's also some big differences on how Twitch moderates channels in different countries. Sometimes is difficult to filter out what a game you never played shows on screen, sometimes people get banned because Twitch doesn't take a good look at the content first. But try to be more aware of what can happen with your channel, and that by streaming, no matter your size, you are now a public person. So what you do and say will be impacted by the ToS of Twitch, or any other platforms you are present in
I understand that but it annoys me that people like Tyler1 can call Riot Games employees paycheck hunters and insult them for their poor work on the game openly
Is critiquing a gaming company and its work really the same as a "dumb (rape) joke" though? Of course it can be one rule for the big creators and another for the smaller streamers, but that just means you need to be aware and careful of the ToS until you reach the point it no longer matters to you
Small creators like you, me and everyone else don't get the same "free pass" that top 0,001% of content creators get, so it should be no surprise that they enforce their rules on this side of the platform, rather than potentially lose all the revenue that they get from popular creators..
Please don't share this kind of content. We are all aware that there are many people that disregard rules and don't get banned.
7:12 PM
If you want, go ahead an appeal your ban with Twitch. But my advice for you is to not waste your time comparing your content to anyone else's. Work on improving yours instead, and watch out to avoid the repeating the cause of your ban in the future.
4
7:15 PM
Is this isn't clear enough, don't make jokes about topics that can be disrespectful, harmful, illegal or offensive. Try to always cultivate a positive viewing experience for your audience.
Further, if you do want to share this kind of content, be aware that there are consequences for doing so, including but not limited to a temporary ban. Likely, you were reported by one of your viewers and not an automated system. As @Thercio mentioned, you can always appeal the ban if you feel that the ban was unjust according to the Twitch TOS.
Exactly. We don't need that kind of content here in our community. It doesn't help create healthy conversations about content creation, there isn't anything to be learned from it and we ourselves don't want to give any kind of free advertisement for this kind of rubbish (both creator and content).

Yea out of six sponsor streams in the last few years the only ones that paid me were Streamlabs ones Oddly Raid SHADOW LEGENDS!!!! Paid me when I did it thru Streamlabs but not through stream elements. It was late about a month but they claimed net 90 from the end of the broadcast month so whatever on that. Elements does do a lot right, but the sponsor deals I’ve stopped at this point. Third one after no pay was enough lol
synthie_cat
See, the biggest mistake you made from my perspective in this discussion is that you elected to speak about a different problem. I was outlining and explaining the systemic failure on how advertising with streamers work; how there is a power imbalance which results in exploitative behavior were only a selected few can benefit massively while the appeal for the company is to get a broad foundation of people advocating for them. It's kinda triangle shaped if you think about it. Really reminds me of a certain ancient Egyptian construction of tombs, but that's probably just my interpretation. Yet you speak about a deal that seems to kinda have worked out for you. Tender has said all the further important points. I am glad you benefitted from your deals thus far yet you mostly argue that status - e.g. of viewership - is the important metric while you conveniently ignore the "reverse funnel" nature of platforms. No, Twitch / Amazon / Advertisers do not lose money on small streamers, otherwise they would require you to pay to be able to stream. They also deliberately abuse the power they have (meta data collection, constant advertisement A-B testing as well as above mentioned dangling carrot strategies) to vet people who have the prospect of making more money for them. Otherwise it would be like injecting growth hormones into a tumor - Daddy B. would have pulled the plug long ago. Further evidence can be found in the way they are treating "partners" - what a cursed word in the context; partnership requires communication on eye-level - from the very get-go:
Even if you reach the arbitrary metrics they announce that you have to reach to become "partnered" they can still elect to not make you one
Recent reduction of the payout
A lot more Feel free to reply; however I am relatively sure that we both will just continue to disagree. And that's fine; yet I deemed it important enough to differentiate my opinion in this way to long text as this is a "public" chat.
Indeed. Sponsorship offerings for new creators is a great idea (on paper), but when put to practice, it can be very easily abused, and the content creator is always on the short end of the rope.
2:15 PM
The only thing you can do about it is not take any sponsorship deals and carry on with your content.

Never heard of Pinnacle Studio, but people usually recommend DaVinci because it's free, and it's pretty solid software. Doesn't export directly to webm, though.

Lol I bet that doesn’t stop people from asking tho.
I’m just worried cause I tried using it and now I’m thinking I need to lock myself up and watch videos on how to use it cause I tried to just simply cut a couple things and I was already lost
First thing is to really nail the scenario. First think and write down, edit, correct. Only then record - you will change stuff along the way anyways, but it will be much less of a hassle if you have a good scenario. Especially for such an episode

UI/UX is a completely unexplored field, regarding live content creation
True, one of my to-do things on the list, to explore it a bit deeper

DaVinci Resolve is an industry-standard tool and can be intimidating, but it's industry standard for a reason. It has nearly all of the tools you would need to create video content. There are easier options, like Premier Rush (paid app), but if you're going to use that, you might as well just use YouTube Studio.(edited)

Personally, I use Adobe Premier and Media Encoder because I can import/export to .webm that way, which is a limitation of Resolve as @Thercio pointed out

You can get single-app licenses, but I hop between Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects as well, so having all apps for $55/mo is what I've decided works for me.
Gonna be real, I want to make content with more people, I hate feeling like I’m on an island. I mean we’re all trying to build a community right?

Like I’m not trying to find my new best friend or whatever, I’m just trying to join other communities and maybe in the process expand my own.

And I’m not trying to be a leach, I understand streamer etiquette, I’d never hop into someone’s chat or general channel on their discord and beg people to watch me.

Tbh I haven’t gotten to branch out too much yet, I’ve been wanting to do commentary on different topics. But I’ve noticed the only time I get decent views are when I do tier lists

Couple of questions you should ask yourself besides what tender asked you:
Have you simply asked another creator in who's community you're active if they are interested?
You speak about "commentary on different topics" yet that's incredibly vague. Do you have a list of topics that you'd like to speak about?
Is there maybe someone in your community that you vibe with that you could invite/empower to start streaming?
do others know that you create content?
There's a difference between going somewhere for the first time and blaring out "Hey I also stream" and being s regular and saying: "Oh, interesting - that topic recently came up in one of my streams and I learned XYZ about it. What do you think?" Also I can recommend respectfully DMing other streamers if you're around for a bit already. That goes from "Hey, your recent stream about [Topic] was really interesting to me, I do similar things would you be interested in doing [Thing] together?" Ask them before if it's cool if you DM them. If you approach openly and with some foundation people might still decline the offer but might come back at another time.
